The Association of Western Australian Art
Galleries Inc.
CODE OF ETHICS
(adopted 19 June 1995 by commercial gallery members: revised 23 May 2006)
- In their dealings with the public, artists and other
galleries, Gallery Members will be guided by the Code of
Practice For the Australian Arts and Craft Sector published by
the National Association for the Visual Arts, and, where
relevant, by The Indigenous Visual Arts Protocol, also published
by the Association.
- Members shall act honestly and with integrity in their
dealings with the public, artists, and other galleries, and
shall not act in any way which will discredit AWAAG.
- Members of AWAAG must assume responsibility for the works
they show and be responsible for the proper disclosure of
information relating to any work exhibited.
- A member shall not purport to act for an artist where that
artist is represented solely by another Gallery. Nor shall a
member offer for sale the works of an artist known to be solely
represented by another member without prior consultation with
that member and agreement as to the terms for the payment of
commission.
- A member gallery shall not approach an artist to exhibit the
work of that artist in the knowledge that this would be in
direct conflict with that artist’s existing representation,
without first consulting the gallery which has sole
representation of the artist. And where an artist seeks a change
in his or her sole representation, the member approached should
satisfy himself/herself that the artist’s representative is
aware of the proposed change.
- A member shall not act in any way that may undermine
exhibitions at another member’s gallery.
- Members endorse the principle of making resale royalty
payments to the artists they represent each time a work is
resold through the gallery.
