Crispin Akerman - New
Works
The paintings of Crispin invite our re-engagement with an ancient
genre. Still life reflects an appreciation of the profound mystery
contained in the objects with which we surround ourselves. Such work
highlights the condition of the everyday, whose familiarity often
obscures its role as an expression of the wonder and beauty of
material being. Making use of stylistic characteristics evocative of
the Dutch Masters of the seventeenth century, Akerman invites the
viewer to take a fresh look at what this meditative approach might
offer today. An inner tension renders the works too unsettling to be
purely decorative. |

Matthew Johnson - New
Works
In August, Greenhill Galleries is pleased to announce an
exhibition of new paintings by prominent Australian abstractionist,
Matthew Johnson.
Johnson’s large-scale oil pieces continue his investigation of
space, light, speed and tactility. These kaleidoscopic canvases
secure and link in a greater all-over project. They frequently pose
a number of metaphysical questions about nature, perception and
existence. Through the use of form he explores the complexities of
the natural world and delivers his observations in terms of
subtleties of light apprehended and registered. Johnson’s technical
clarity and emotional intensity confirm his standing as a truly
professional artist. He has held successful exhibitions throughout
Australia, and is represented in corporate and private collections
throughout Australia, Cologne, Munich, New York, Madrid, Seoul and
Canada. |

Nigel
Hewitt - The Inland Sea
With a successful artistic career spanning more than
30 years, revered Perth painter, Nigel Hewitt, returns to Greenhill
Galleries with his latest collection of intriguing and sophisticated
artworks. The Inland Sea is a journey of exploration into
Australia’s literal and metaphorical history. This body of work
considers the impact of the misguided ventures and explorations of
the early colonialists. Continuing the focus of his previous work,
in this show Hewitt illustrates the mapping, layering and charting
of our psychic and physical landscapes. Hewitt’s technique of
layered oils and wax creates mystic worlds for the contemplation and
critical consideration of the way in which our world has been
imagined and formed. |
